Senate Democrats Mourn the Passing of Dolores Huerta, Daughter of New Mexico

Senate Democrats New MexicoThe New Mexico Senate Democratic Caucus issued the following statement on the passing of labor and civil rights leader Dolores Huerta:
“New Mexico has lost one of its own. Dolores Huerta’s story began here, in a working community. Her father was a miner, a farmworker, and a union man who served in this Legislature. She carried that legacy from northern New Mexico to the fields of California and then to the entire nation.
“Dolores Huerta stood with people who harvested this country’s food but couldn’t afford to feed their own families. She believed that dignity at work, a fair wage, and a voice in our democracy belong to everyone, not just a privileged few. She spent a lifetime organizing farmworkers, registering voters, and lifting up women and families who had too often been ignored. Her work shaped the values so many of us bring to public service.
“She kept marching and organizing into her nineties, and she never stopped believing that ordinary people, organized together, can change the course of history. We send our deepest condolences to her family and to everyone she inspired. The best way to honor Dolores is to keep doing the work. ¡Sí, se puede!”
